Seafood marketing training for fish managersVanuatu Daily Post – A Seafood Export Market Development (SEMD) training is currently taking place at the Department of Agriculture at Tagabe in Port Vila.

The objective of the training course is to promote commercial market development and the establishment of export markets leading to the achievement of increased value of seafood catch and seafood exports.

The cost is funded by the New Zealand Pacific Fisheries Training Programme (PFTP) and is being held from April 3 through 13. It is facilitated by University of the South Pacific trainers – Cherie Morris, Shirleen Bala and Viliame Rabici and supported by in-country experts.

The 15 trainees attending include fish managers from fishing associations in the six provinces of Vanuatu, the Ministry of Fisheries based in Port Vila, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Tourism and Industry and the private sector.

Jeremie Kaltavara of Vanuatu Department of Fisheries says the curriculum was tailored to meet the seafood market conditions of Port Vila and covered: seafood supply chain safety/hygiene; good handling practices along the supply chain; business models, planning and management; fisheries management; seafood marketing fundamentals and principles; and project formulation.
